JESC 2007: voting analysis
Please note: in all statistics concerning points given and received, the 12 points every country scored automatically are not included.
Quickies
- For the first time, a country managed to win the contest twice
- For the first time, Greece finished last
- For the third year running, the winning song was performed last
- With the winner being only one point ahead of the runner-up, it was the closest voting ever
Voting statistics
Belarus has received points from all countries but Cyprus, all the other countries gave at least four points and four times the twelve points. The runner-ups from Armenia were obviously polarizing: they received seven times the douze, twice the ten, once eight, seven and five - and four times not a single vote. Although with 17 countries competing it is very likely that a country receives points from all countries (since every country has to give points to ten out of 16 other countries), only Russia and Serbia managed to do so - they finished third and sixth respectively.
Records
Belarus has scored an average of 8.56 points - the lowest average score of a winner ever. On the other hand, Armenia has scored the second highest average of points of a runner-up with 8.50. Apart from the first contest in 2003, Armenia is also the most succesful debuting country ever reaching second place. The other debutants Georgia and Bulgaria also did quite well finishing fourth and seventh respectively while Lithuania finished only 13th. Countries that have achieved their best results so far are Serbia and F.Y.R. Macedonia while Greece, Portugal and Belgium have reached their worst placings so far.
The runing order
For the third year in a row, the country that performed last finished first. Last year, the songs that reached the top 3 were all performed in the second half, this year it is less obvious that songs performed late do better: the Armanian entry was performed third and finished second, the Serbian entry that came third was number nine of the evening and the fourth placed song from Gerogia has even opened the show. On the other hand, the songs performed at number 14, 15 and 16 did not reach the top 10 with Greece coming last. Of course, the question comes up if the new voting system, which means that you can vote right after the show begins, does affect the results after all. But there is one thing that will probably never change: the song performed second did not do well at all: Belgium finished third from last.
Diaspora voting
That's a sensitive subject. First of all it has to be pointed out that giving points to a neighbouring country does not necessarily mean that there are "political" reasons - the televoters may have also just thought that the song they have voted for was the best one! Nevertheless, there were some friendly neighbours as always: Belgium has received its only points from the Netherlands, Greece has received its only points from Cyprus (even if only two this year). Georgia and Armenia have exchanged their twelve points while the Netherlands have recieved their highest mark from Belgium, Russia from Belarus, F.Y.R. Macedonia from Bulgaria and Serbia and Cyprus from Greece. Nevertheless, there are other examples that don't prove diaspora voting: Malta gave its 4 - 12 points to Eastern countries, Sweden its top 4 marks. Furthermore, Sweden managed to reach the first half of the scoreboard the second year in a row without any other Scandinavian country taking part.
Belarus has scored an average of 6.72 points per non-former USSR country. If the other five countries had given Belarus the same average amount of points, Belarus would have probably not won the competition (it has to be taken into consideration that the "missing" points would have been given to other countries!). Nevertheless, with six former USSR countries taking part, this statistic is rather inaccurate: mathematically, it is very unlikely to be able to expect these countries give to the same average amount of points than the others.

Belarus song is nice but they won just because there was 7 of 17 countries from ex USSR. Their clan was the bigest this year.
If next year wuld be all 6 ex Yugoslavia countries, the winner will be from that part of Europe.

Don't forget that Edin is Serbo hater, he confessed... he always find a way to say something bad about Serbia on every contest so don't pay attention !
Armenia didn't receive pts from 4 countries, Belarus didn't receive pts from Cyprus only, and Serbia receive pts from all countries.
I didn't liked Armenian song, but I am glad that we receive a pts fro ALL countries, that proves that song is GOOD.

Will you get over "Orthodox European countries" for once? Serbia was 3rd with just one neighbour and not a single "Serbian-diaspora country" participating in the JESC! You still don't think that the quality of the song matters after all?

Doesn't anybody think that the issue of "Who gets to sing last wins" is a bit more serious than diaspora voting in the JESC? I mean, it happened for the third time in a row! How probable is that it was by accident?
I really begin to hate this message board. I wanted to post another comment in regard to the JESC which don't include spam or foul words but I always get the following message when I push the "React" button:
"Sorry, (some) the contents of your reaction your reaction is either marked as "spam" or foul language. Please use the news reactions only to reply to the news article above."
That isn't the first time something like this happen. The filter software this site use is not perfect. It doesn't filter a lot of foul language and on another hand prevent the post of comments which don't break any rules. It really should be improved.
I personally like the song from Belarus more than the one from Armenia. But I although think that a lot of songs where better than those two.
I don't think that Belarus has an unfair advantage in comparison to Armenia. Armemia got a lot of diaspora votes, too. They both have it easier to get points than some other countries.
the only thing right here is that the contest works :is fun, but the voting kills everything, i'm not from europe and i can say that for me the winner should be Armenia, the reason why belarus won was because the diaspora and maybe as somebody said the language is if not the same almost between the ex sovietic republics, besides is a junior contest saiyng awful things about a kid, grow up.
well and excelent show and althoug Greece, Cyprus and Belarus weren't as good as the rest for me and Armenia, Sweden, Serbia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Ukraine and Macedonia did it really good the kids had fun, they meet a new culture and friends that's the good part for all of them.

I just want to ask you one thing... I mean all you ESC fans...
Do you honestly believe that Molitva wasn't a great hit in Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, F.Y.R. Macedonia, BiH...more than any other song from ESC... ???
Yes they are our neighbor, and yes they give us 12 pts (I mean i vote for Molitva too since I am from Montenegro) but did you ever thought that no other song we liked better than Molitva ????
Do you know how HUGE hit Molitva is all ex YU countries, and if you count all ESC songs in these countries you could not hear them all together as you could hear Molitva on every station...
So if Molitva is hit, people love it and vote for it, whats there unfair...

If eastern Europe form their own contests than you're show would be boring for you. I mean every year you give to east highest pts, so that probably means that you like this songs from east... am I right???
I mean if you don't like eastern songs why do you vote for east every year, and if you do like this songs why are you complaining that they done so well. (As long as I can remember UK give 8 pts to Ukraine, 10 pts to Greece, and 12 to Turkey... thats pretty much east)

While this page was opening I tried to predict who had won. Didn't watch the programme, didn't hear any of the songs and I guessed an ex-USSR. Hmm.

I usually like Swedish ESC songs the most! But not this time @ JESC. And Serbia should withdraw 2 then cause we can't win w/out Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Austria, Montenegro, Germany etc.
Grow up! It's just a one night event when children from all around Europe share some fun moments that they will never forget.

Only because you liked Swedish song doesn't mean that it was the best, or that they were robbed. As long as I can see you are the only one here saying that...
JESC is a great show, its not much about winning but having great time, and if you watch show last night you could see that all children had a great time... they were singing along with a winner from Belarus, and that's the most important.
I don't see why Sweden should stop participating in JESC or ESC, just because you say so ??? If you don't like this show just don't watch it and let the others to enjoy in songs and good time.
Thankfully the UK has sense and doesn't compete in this poor excuse of a contest. How any adult can be a fan of this is beyond me.
I'm not surprised at all. Most of the countries taking part were from the East.

last nights resulds were pathetic .. i could actually predict the countries votes especially 12 pnts before they annonced them !
sadly i think that we will watch this hilarious scoreboard next may as well because even esc new format will not be able to change diaspora and neighbour voting at least in the final imo... so guys who will it be in may? fyrom? russia? ukraine? or armenia? thats the big question !
Armenia and Serbia were the best by far... It is obvious that the issue of "whoever sings last wins" should be addressed (in the JESC) with much more urgency than block voting. I honestly didn't find any Western song good enough to vote for. (Btw, the Swedish girl looked as if she should have joined the adult ESC! Although quite decent, that kind of thing usually fails at the JESC.)
