Bulgaria 2007 artists on video

Exclusive: The first Elitsa & Stoyan interview

Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankoulov are representing Bulgaria at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest and are tipped as the strongest entry so far from the country. They were selected as a wildcard in the national final on Saturday and were chosen by public vote to become Bulgaria's third Eurovision Song Contest entry just four days ago. Today they arrived in Athens as the first step of their promotion of the song Voda (Water) where they will perform at the Greek national final tomorrow.

In their first international interview since winning the Bulgarian ticket to the Eurovision Song Cotnest, Elitsa and Stoyan spoke to esctoday.com's Stella Floras before leaving for a sound check and to catch some of the closed-door rehearsals for tomorrow night's show at the Athinon arena in Athens.

Find out how important participation is to them, the meaning behind the song and the underlying message. They discuss the importance of the themes of music that influence them and explain the theme of the song, Voda, meaning 'water' in Bulgarian. They talk of their gratitude to the Bulgarian broadcaster for selecting them as one of three wildcard for the national final and the public for voting them as the national choice for Helsinki. Find out about what is planned for the stage show and much more in the exclusive first international interview below.

To all ESC fans: Stoyan and Elitsa said they are preparing their live performance and will try to make it very attractive. They said there would be many secrets and they don't want to reveal them. But they wouldn't take any dancers or drummers with them because they think in such case the audience wouldn't be concentrated on the main act ;) The only thing they revealed is that they have asked the organizers to make a real rain on the stage in Helzinki! But they don't know if this could be fulfiled :)

Very good song and excellent video!
I hope Bulgaria does not make a poor performance on the day, and that it does go through to the final. Please don't do the same mistake as last year with Belgium!
Bulagria deserves a place in the final and in the final top 10.
Best of luck, you'll have my vote.

don't know why but this song reminds me of ruslana, too many drums maybe?? anyway, this kind of ''weird'' songs always have enough chance to win the esc and this is one of the faves this year, good luck from ur neighbour turkey!

When i saw for the first time the Bulgarian video i felt exactly the same as when i saw Ruslana's video 3 years ago. I was sure that she would win. Sound, choreography, music.
So now i am sure that Elitsa is the favorite but i am not sure that she could be as impressive as in the video the night of the final (for example their appearance in the Greek final).
Hope they have the experience to be competitive as in the video because this is a song who makes the difference this year and i like it. Until now i feel that they dont know or they have no the means to promote the song in backstage. I have many examples but i dont think that here is the right place to explain.
So my 12 points goes to Bulgaria this year and i am happy for them as new members of the European Union.
Regarding the Greek song Sarbel is a nice guy, young, fresh and for sure with words like Yassou (Greek islands memories ) can promote in the best way the greek product (Sun, see, love) in other words turism.
I am proud of him and our song.
I am sure that Greece and Cyprus will be on top 10.
Eurovision is a party.
So lets party and live your senses (also with the Greek song) and good luck to all the Countries.

@ Simeon Kirov

I understand what you are saying about improvising in every live performance. Many times musicians do this. About 90% of the live concerts that I've been to sound different from the Artists's recorded version. I'm only worried that since Elitsa & Stoyan are heading to a contest where their fate depends on the votes given to them, the voters may get confused on the song. In my opinion, they should be consistent for now...let the voting public learn and love their song (as I have). In Helsinki (in semi-final and I really hope in the Final), hopefully the song will feel more familiar to more voters. There (at Helsinki) with a great performance I believe Bulgaria can get a great result...hopefully # 1.

I'm just very passionate about this song. It touches something inside of me. I'm not from Bulgaria. I've visited Bulgaria numerous times and I have a sense of the people and their history and culture. I'm one of those people who see passed borders (national and ethnic). I support what I like and feel, not what I'm supposed to like and support

Thank you for all the great links.

Absolutely agree with Peter L. Stoyan should let the girl sing. He is ruining the song with those sounds.

@Peter L

Elitsa and Stoyan are jazz musicians. It means that they'll most likely improvise on every live performance. Whatever, here are some links to other their performances:

Did anyone watch the Greek Natioanl Finals last night? Bulgaria performed Voda. Until that moment it was my # 1 song. However, at the end of the song the man began making these sounds (which he didn't do in the video nor anywhere else I had heard and/or had seen the song). The saying "less is more" applies here. Please don't over-do it. Also, for Helsinki, please get a bit creative with the presentation. It's a great song. It will be sad to not see it passing to the finals. Many people in these forums say that the ESC is about the song and not the presentation. If that was the case, the ESC would not be televised, but would only be broadcasted on the radio. This is 2007, not 1947. Visual is very inportant. It all has to be tied together. Come on Bulgaria...don't let us down.

1. Albania. Magical & mysterious.
2. Malta. Bonkers!
3. Slovenia. It's like the fall of Communism never happened, hurrah!
4. Cyprus. Dana International, doing Kylie, doing Anna Vissi. A disco stomper!
5. Switzerland. Inspired! Tackles a new and important theme with aplomb.
6. Belarus. Love the Bond intro, but his big nose lets it down.
7. Bulgaria. Raw, unpolished, chaotic. She needs to watch where she puts those sticks.
8. Israel. Alf Poir is back! Funny, topical, exhausting.
9. FYR Macedonia. Nice & melodic. Looks so much better with long hair.
10. Norway. She could be Gina G's mum, and that's good enough for me.
11.Netherlands. Great voice & a good tune.
12.Romania. It's easy to like, but doesn't really go anywhere.
13.Moldova. The best of this sort of thing.
14.Poland. It's a messy mix, but she's good.
15.Estonia. A much better song than Finland. Should do 'Star's in their Eyes'.
16.Iceland. Moody, boring.
17.Denmark. He's come straight from the building site. Super cheesy.
18.Montenegro. Even in 'No Name's' bumsters he delivers the goods.
19.Belgium. If only they'd included some vampires!
20.Spain. Thank god I only have tickets for the semi-final. Amateurish twaddle.
21.Latvia. Truly horrible. Just when you think it can't get any worse along comes....
22.Ireland. What is this about? Terribly mournful tone. Will probably win.
23.Finland. Silly lyrics. Leave me alone, with pleasure.
24.Armenia. A charisma free zone attempting Scott Walker. Boring.

CONGRATULATIONS BULGARIA!!!
Woooooow what a great song. This is the one of the best entries ever at ESC, I liked it at first hearing and can't stop listening it. GOOD LUCK and 12 points from Bosnia & Herzegovina :)

Well, I can´t understand why this song is so much liked by the people here! I mean, it´s absolutely bizarre and something, that I haven´t heard before, but that doesn´t say, that I think it´s great. It´s absolutely strange and sounds slanting. The cvoice sounds a bit like the terrible one of Aleksandra from Belarus 2004 and I hope that this "song" will stay in the semi.

Songs like the ones from Norway, Denmark or Estonia aren´t new, but there are nice to hear and doesn´t make your ears bleeding.
