...surprising winners
esctoday.com TOP TEN: No. 7 and 6
The list features Eurovision Song Contest winning performers or songs that were not consideredf favourites for first place before the contest. As reliable information on pre-contest media reports is only available since the introduction of the preview videos in 1971, only entries of the last 39 years are considered. It is regarded how much an entry was of a favourite at the time it took part, so "retrospective" surprises are not considered. The following criteria were included in the ranking:
- Betting odds
- Media predictions
- Reactions by the audience in the hall and the commentators
- Reactions after the victory
- Commercial success of an entry compared to the success of other songs that year
So here we start...
No. 7 - Lordi with Hard rock hallelujah (Finland 2006)
The clear winners of the Finnish national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 were Lordi with their song Hard rock hallujah. Performing in monster masks and with pyrotechnics on stage it was one of the most discussed choices of the year. It is often considered the first hard rock song in the contest, although die hard fans of the genre might say that it is in fact a pop song disguised as hard rock. Never having won and never having been in the top five, Finland was still not considered a top favourite for winning with betting odds between 1-10 and 1-12, although it was expected that Finland would qualify for the final the first time giving them a chance to achieve their first top ten placing since 1989. The top favourite of the year was the host country Greece, which was seen on top for the third year in a row. However, after the semi final, Sweden was suddenly the top favourite for winning according to the bookmakers. Other favourites that year were Romania and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
FInland qualified from the semi final and delivered a spectacular stage show in the final. When the voting started, Finland got eight points from Slovenia and went straig to top after getting ten from Andorra. Lordi stayed on top of the scoreboard until the end of the show eventually getting the trophy from a slightly nervous Helena Paparizou. Later it was announced that Finland had already won the semi final.
Hard rock hallelujah was a hit in Europe reaching the top ten of the single chats in at least ten countries. In Finland it was a number one hit and in Germany, it was certified gold for sales exceeding 150,000 copies. In the United Kingdom it was the most successful winning song in a long time peaking at number 25.
No. 6 - Herreys with Diggi-loo, diggi-ley (Sweden 1984)
The Swedish Melodifestival in 1984 saw a trio winning. Herreys brought a song to Luxembourg, which would be known for its strange lyrics and the golden boots the singers wore while performing it. Part of the team behind the entry already had had Eurovision experience as lyricist Britt Lindeborg had already written the lyrics to the 1969 Swedish entry. Ten years after Abba, the Swedish contributions had lost attention and Sweden was not considered a top favourite for winning, especially as the draw position was number one. After the performance, UK commentator Terry Wogan called the entry "by no means the worst start to a Eurovision" he had seen.
When the voting began, Sweden started with no points as they were the first country to give their votes. Ireland got the first twelve, but no clear winner could be seen as Ireland, Spain and Denmark were all at the top of the scoreboard at some points. After Denmark had voted, Sweden was in first position for the first time and they would stay there until the very end eventually beating Ireland into second place.
Most people might not remember that Diggi-loo, diggi-ley was actually a small hit in Europe reaching the top five of the charts in Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden as well as the top ten in Switzerland.
Tomorrow, we will introduce no. 5 and 4 on the list.

Tomi Metsäketo sang in Italian, and I know it is not a very good idea. But he is a good singer.
Marita Taavitsainen is our Tango queen 1995, the same year when Jari Sillanpää was crowned Tango king.
I just hope, that we don`t see this year something like Eläkeläiset. It is terrible, when you hope that they will stay in semifinals and suddenly you see them in superfinal.
Sad, soon my summer holiday is over.....
Marianna
Thank you very much for mentioning him, coz after that I checked Finish NF in 2006, I never do that before and I liked so many songs, it was sooo great final!
But I don't like winner!
the best were:
1. Safe Six - I Can't Wait
2. Marita Taavitsainen - Enkeli itkee
3. Annika Eklund - Shanghain valot
4. Ville Pusa & Christa Renwall - Eternally
5. Jane - V.I.P.
6. Jennie - Take Me Higher
7. Johanna Pakonen - Kerta viimeinen
8. Tomi Metsäketo - Eternamente Maria
WOW almost everything!
lol
I wish and believe in my Finland that it will organize AMAZING Euroviisut 2011!
In 2006 we had 12 artists invited by YLE. Each artist performed two songs. Lordi`s songs were Bringing back the balls to rock and Hard rock hallelujah. Between their performances, they were inside large cage.
At first I was shocked by Lordi, but I guessed that they will win in Finland. Afterwards, I began to like that song very much. I just hope, that Tomi Metsäketo who was the second will take part again.
After Lordi`s victory some people in Finland didn`t accept them at all. And nobody knew what was people`s attitude in europe, after all.
People in Finland didn`t believe in victory. After semi-final they began to believe ranking in top five. It was great when Finland won after 40 years and sometimes poor results.
That year I liked also :
Everything ( Greece ), Alvedansen ( Norway ), Lejla ( Bosnia-Herzegovina), Every song is a cry for love ( Ireland ), Invincible ( Sweden ) and Never let you go ( Russia )
In my opinion, the worst were Lithuania and Iceland.
Lordi's victory was very important in Spain for two reasons: for the song itself and to maintain interest in the ESC after the second failure in a row of the Spanish entry because the ridiculous and poor performance of Las Ketchup. Lordi has been successfully in tour twice in Spain since their victory. Concerning Herrey's, it was really shameful the 1984 juries decided the Swedish victory in a contest with other songs that deserved much more the first place, Italy the best by far but also it could had won countries like Spain, Ireland and France.
@daniel
ok then , thanks , i will listen to some songs (or maybe all) from the 90s when I will have the passion for it...
I have listened to the top 10 of each year from the 90s but I can't say there are many great songs in that decade. It's because I don't like the kind of music that dominated ESC in this decade at all. There are some masterpieces of course, like "Bandido", "Nocturne" and "Dinle", but most of the rest is pretty boring.
I wouldn't judge pre 2000 by digiloo what's it. The 1980s wasn't a great decade overall either. If you know almost nothing before 2000, I would suggest starting with the 1990s, there were many great songs.

Your opinion about the effect of XL sized boobs! We'll discuss it later!
Avat
Which question actually?
Marko
I will answer to your post about 0 pointing after final results are published! No intrest about it's discussions!
Marko
Mmmm! She is beautifull, but in general I prefer slavic and southern beauties
I don't understand why this site is still focusing in these funny but irrelevant ranks while the season has started and it's bringing more REAL news about coming ESC, like the new Swiss selection (Switzerland will decide before Albania this year) or the five candidates proposed by TRT.
Maybe Kasia Cerkwicka will do better than Ich Troje, she was 2nd in Piosenka dla Europy with her AWESOME song "Na kolana"!

Please Kasia participate in Polish NF again!
@ws
lets say 'know almost nothing' !!
i listen sometimes to the songs marcus posts here in this top...
for example i listened to this diggi loo diggi ley by herrey cz i wanted to know if it was really a good song (therefore a surprising winner) .
@daniel
i listened to some of the earlier songs of eurovision (mainly those from 80s) , believe me or not i liked none of them !! im not interested in the earlier years of the competition , but of those after the 2000's !!
It surprises me that someone can both:
-know nothing about a year
-yet still know that that year was fokking boring with lots of stupid songs
Now that doesn't make sense, does it? One of these two premisses has to be not true.
i know nothing about 1994 (and im not interested in those f****** boring years with so many stupid songs )
You clearly no nothing about those years, if you think the songs were all stupid
I thought Lordi were FANTASTIC!!!!
Romania was my favourite that year but Lordi did deserve to win. In a way I'm glad they did instead of Mihai due to the originality and the fact a rock song won Eurovision. ESC needs more Rock and Heavy Metal.
Kevin
But do you really wanna break my heart that cruel not allowing me to vote my favorite singer Carola!?
@dragan
yeah its ok dude , i know it .
i liked both ich troj & elena ristevska in 2006 , but i was happy macedonia passed instead of poland cz that sexy woman with her catchy song deserved it more !!
and to let folks in serbia & montenegro to vote in the final in 2006 was just ebus another way to grab some doughs !! a country, which doesn't participate in eurovision should not have the opportunity to vote !!
@ kevin
Ok, that explains why you were suprised by the fact that Lordi is "a suprise winner"
I just tried to explain.
Dragan
Shorts were in ESC, but she did promotion in Armenia and some other countries, obviously with mini skirts and dresses AvatArmenia enjoyed a lot!
@dragan
actually , i know nothing about 1994 (and im not interested in those f****** boring years with so many stupid songs ) , cz i follow esc since 2001 as i mentioned few days ago as well , and about 2006 , i watched the show live then, but had no clue which countries the favourites were (back then i didn't visited one single esc site in the internet as i do once in a while now) !! a eurofriend of mine from eurovision.tv told me later , that lordi were favourites for the win !!
AvatArmenia
I sere how she was "impressive", that only neighbors and diaspora voted for her! Without them she will be one "impressive" 0 pointer!

Didn't you like girls from the Netherlands and Sandra Oxenryd from Estonia/Sweden?
Sandra Oxenryd was the most beautiful in 2006!

"mini skirts of Elena"
I always thought in was shorts
@ kevin
Yes, I know for language rule in 1994. Still, it has nothing to do with surprising winners (both Finland in 2006 and Ireland in 1994).
