Some entries that almost became nul pointers
Some songs almost ended up with nul points but were eventually saved. In 1998, Greece was at the very bottom of the scoreboard a long time until they were finally saved by Cyprus, giving their traditional 12 to Greece. Those were the only points the country received that year. The year after, Portugal also scored 12 points in total getting all of them from France. In the semi final in 2004, Andorra got 12 points from Spain and nothing more. In 2006, they got all their eight points from Spain again.
In 2001, Latvia got 16 points in total narowly qualifiying for Tallinn thanks to the withdrawal of Portugal. However, eight of those 16 points came from Estonia and another eight from Lithuania. In the semi final in 2009, they also got all their points from their Blatic neighbors. It didn't help this time as Latvia still came last.
Due to the voting system used in 1971, 1972 and 1973 all countries received at least 34, 34 and 32 points respectively. However, if the voting system from 1975 onwards had been used, Malta would have been very likely to get no points at all in 1972 as most of the juries gave the minimum of two points to the Maltese entry.
In 1958, Both Luxembourg and the Netherlands got their only point from Switzerland. If the voting system between 1962 and 1966 had been used, both countries would have probably ended up with zero. The same might have happened to Luxembourg again in 1960 when they got their only point from Italy.
In 1995, Germany had to wait for the second last jury to get its first and only point that year. Ten years later, Germany scored four points in total - two from Moldova and two from Monaco. Curiously enough, those were the only two countries using a jury that year and therefore Germany would have probably scored nul points if all countries had used televoting. In 2006, Malta had to wait for the fifth last jury to get their first and only points that year.
This concludes the twelfth TOP TEN list. Next week, we will continue with the following topic:

@dirofreak
however i liked feminnem this year (lako je sve was my favourite to win) , i wont see them back as well !! croatia should give chances to other talents !!!!
kokorrutmelle kokorrutmelle,
I hadn't seen your comment about 1991. Actually, it seems to me that both songs were favourite to win, but I am not sure.
Geraldine had a feeble voice, often out of tune - she went 'flat-sharp-flat-sharp-flat-sharp' - and that scream of agony (or was it ecstacy?) was the final straw. Nul points, desolet.
And the Dutch song wasn't cheap!! BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! How much is it?
Probably not more than 20 dollars to buy that song and put it in someone's album!
(and so i confirm what was said below about Croatia, they didn't qualify because the song was cheap (Feminem IS cheap and i hope they never try again lol))
(oups i actually assumed you were from the UK because of your "i love london" thing, still that doesn't change anything of what i wrote)
"hy not, as we can see pure guy didn't do anything with his career after that "spectacular victory", he needs one more entry!"
You obviously know nothing about what Rybak did after his victory . Of course since the BBC is saying all the time that ESC is old-fashioned, thus how can ESC artists chart in your country? (same goes for mine of course)
So Now i'll leave you alone with your forecast "The netherlands will win whatever song they send lolololol"
In france we have someone called Omar Harfouch that predicted Azerbaijan to win ESC 2010 because of politics (and cheating).
Guess what he really did is checking the bookies prediction.
Same for Wogan in 2008 but that paid of (of course DIMA IS A STAR and was indeed a huge favourite to win, unlike Safura who was performing first and was a total newcomer (plus Azerbaijan have almost no friends))
That's so pathetic to come up with false assumptions.
That don't even deserve any reply.
Bye.
@ I love London
ESC 2008 was incredible, the staging was perfect. Only problem was the empty hall in semi 1 .
"Croatia this year stayed in the semi[...] but they are from block voting area which Terry Wogan can't stand and they have to be in semi to show as revenge in previous years when some great songs from the West stayed in the semi!"
Are you serious? You're pathetic.
Here's one that was missed...Switzerland 1968. It got its only 2 votes from the final jury (Yugoslavia).
@ Shevek
Absolutely not : in 1991 Sweden was definitely the big favourite to win, and the surprise was precisely that Carola got such a short victory. Nobody expected France to do so well, because the song sounded so far from Eurovision standards. France's victory that year would have been a sensational surprise, while Sweden's victory was totally expected by everyone, including myself. Even if after asome time I changed my mind and realized how the French entry was so much better than the Swedish one. But as I already wrote, I'm not so sad about Carola beating Amina, because Carola has gone on building a huge successful career after the contest, while Amina never found success afterwards.
Very few songs in the list from 2000-onwards. Interesting.
Most surprising winner, I'd agree with Estonia 2001 and Latvia 2002 really wasn't a strong song either.
For me, the worst winner is Russia 2008.
Most surprising and one of the worst winners = Estonia 2001 and Latvia 2002!
Daniel
Portugal didn't have war and chaos!
And Marko doesn't drink at all for your information!
But yes Marko is missing London!
I SIMPLY LOVE REMEDIOS AMAYA!!!
And terry woggan spoke the cruel raw truth of eurovision...I don't like it either and I sometimes get frustrated with his comments but I realise he just speaks the truth...his voting commentary is among the few (not to say the only one..) that pointed out in a sarcastic but fair tone all the monstrosities of televote..
Croatia took the place it got because it had a cheap performance, mediocre to bad vocals and no neighbours in the 2nd semi to support them..so they took they actual place they deserved..(not that one balkan country in the same semi would help them qualify..not even two would help !)
You didn't mentioned Yugolsavia 1991!
Most surprising winners:
Spain 1968, Ireland 1970, Luxembourg 1983, Norway 1985, Belgium 1986, Yugoslavia 1989, Ireland 1993, Ireland 1996, Estonia 2001, Latvia 2002.
Today it's the 29 of Augost 2010.
the number 1 of the suprising will be announced next week.
but from now i am guessing the 1st place.
people, mark and frame what i write and im willing even to bet 100 euros on it.
MARIE N-I WANNA.
switzerland 1967 seems to be the defenitely 0-pointer now.
c'mon, it wasn't that bad.
Oh yes, now I remember. I loved Czech Republic 2009!
They should have been among the top 10 at least.
Marko
Have you had a drink too much this evening, or are you just missing my city? Eurovision isn't and wasn't the Terry Wogan show and it was only the UK audience that had to suffer his comments all those years. I'm so pleased I have a collection of DVDs where I never have to listen to his voice and ridiculous comments ever again, it's far preferable to have commentary in a language I don't understand.
If there was this great conspiracy, most countries would have to be in on it. I can't see countries agreeing to it and it would have leaked. I don't think Yugoslavia had the best song in 1989, but that's nothing unusual for the winner. I don't believe the juries felt a duty for Yugoslavia to win, Portugal are still waiting after all.
Poor Géraldine. Even 0 % in this voting although there were worse songs both among the 0 pointers and the songs from 1967 ...
Ooops w s sorry, I realized you didn't mean that, but still I think what I wrote!
bye
Why deny one country the opportunity to be in the final?
Of course not, but also stop making fake balance, Croatia this year stayed in the semi, why jury didn't vote for it, did they have bad vocals maybe? No they didn't, but they are from block voting area which Terry Wogan can't stand and they have to be in semi to show as revenge in previous years when some great songs from the West stayed in the semi! they wanna show that now also good songs from east can stay in semi if they wanna so...
the Netherlands with this year song which really was according to 99% crap was voted more than The Netherlands in previous years in semi, it's introduction for good Dutch result for next year or 2012, i that song got so many ponts, imagine when The Netherlands will send JUST A BIT BETTER and JUST A BIT more modern song to ESC! Expect land slide victory! Or maybe The Netherlands should buy Rybak to represent them for a landslide victory with some crap! Why not, as we can see pure guy didn't do anything with his career after that "spectacular victory", he needs one more entry! GOSH, this contest is pure nonsense!
Good bye! (now really, don't force me to reply
LOL
)
I thought they might allow 11 qualifiers from each semi and have 26 finalists, like in 2003. That way we would get 2 more countries in the big final.
Stupid. Why deny one country the opportunity to be in the final?
