...most popular entries that got no points

esctoday.com TOP TEN: No. 3 and 2

The twelfth esctoday.com TOP TEN list continues today with the places 3 and 2 being announced. As revealed on Saturday, this week's topic are the TOP TEN most popular entries that got no points.

The ranking is based on a poll that was held on esctoday.com over two weeks. All 36 entries that finished last with not points were in the running.

So we continue...

No. 3 - Gunvor with Lass ihn (Switzerland 1998)

In 1998, for the first time since 1993, the Swiss broadcaster held a national final to determine their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest and eventually, the first song performed in German since 1990 was chosen. In fact, 1990 representative Egon Egemann went to Birmingham with lead singer Gunvor as a  backing artist, as he had also written the song Lass ihn with her. Shortly before the contest, the singer was surrounded by a little scandal as nude photographies of her were published by a newspaper. After her participation in the contest and her last place with nul points, Gunvor remained in the public eye as her private life received extensive coverage in the yellow press.

It was the third out of four times that Switzerland finished last with nul points. It had previously happened in 1964 and 1967 and it would happen again in the semi final in 2004.

No. 2 - Finn Kalvik with Aldri i livet (Norway 1981)

Finn Kalvik, who is said to be one of Norway's most popular singers, won the Norwegian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 1981 with his own composition Aldri i livet. The song had some very famous supporters as it was produced by ABBA member Benny Andersson, while backing vocals on the studio recording were provided by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. All this did not help as Finn would follow in the footsteps of Jahn Teigen getting no points at all. The song was still a hit in Norway reaching number three on the single charts.

It was the third out of four times that Norway finished last with nul points. Previously it happened in 1963 and 1978 and it would happen again in 1997.

Tomorrow, we will show you the no. 1 on the list.

I love "Aldri i livet" :D Finn really deserved his first place with the English version "Here in my heart" in a European chart shortly after the final in Dublin.

Daniel,

No offense taken. I actually was thinking out loud about fridge magnets. They can be very tacky (you should see the one I got in Ronda :)). My point was that all of mine have special memories attached to them. I should have explained myself better.

As for norway 1981..oh god..his voice is so annoying (as the whole staging) and the song so mellow.. :S an amateur teenage song and performance..
a deserved nil pointer although 1981 was a mediocre year in general..

I hope next week we'll start with real news for ESC 2011.

In AdE club we've conducted a poll predicting how many countries we think that are going to take part in ESC 2011.

The final results:

1- Less than 35: 1% votes
2- 35 to 37: 9% votes
3- 38 to 39: 28% votes
4- 40 to 41: 47% votes
5- 42 to 43: 12% votes
6- More than 43 (record): 3% votes

So, the most predicted figure is 40-41 countries for 2011. That was my personal vote too.

Nom offence was intended, I have fridge magnets too. However, I wouldn't want a plastic Belém Tower which glows in the dark, although I do have a photo of it - the real one that is, not a plastic replica!

40 Polish and international artists will take part in that festival, it really is big! Of other former ESC participants there will be Edyta Gorniak from Poland, Pauline from Sweden who participated in MF 2010, Velvet (several MFs), also from Denmark will be one participant: Safri duo.

I've been reading all the comments about mass tourism. I must confess that my fridge is covered with magnets. They range from the tacky to the less tacky. Can a fridge magnet become classy just because it was bought at Museo Nacional del Prado? One thing I am certain of, they all have meaning to me and they help to make my kitchen brighter.

It's one on the end of Portobello, Notting Hill gate was a bit closer and with Central, Circle and District lines all important for tourist places to center!

They have both now, light from within and light from the outside. The tourist souvenir industry certainly has become a refined business ...

Marko

Probably, it was a huge place ... and the first hotel ever where I got a card as key to my room. My granny felt very outdated when I told her how to use it ...

You probably used Ladbroke Grove station then? Where I lived was between that and White City, I have fond memories from that whole area. Porobello Road is popular because of the market

The carnival is always the last weekend of August and is incredibly crowded, you should see the mess the next day :O

Togravus

I missed the illuminated papal palace souvenirs in Avignon, I got a luminous one instead :P

There is one big hotel between London and Tower bridge, I guess that's it!

Tower Bridge was my granny's favourite monument. That's why we had rooms with a view of the bridge when I visited London for the first time in 1989. (I took her to London for a week as a present for her 90th birthday ...) Is the Tower Thistle Hotel still there?
