Ukraine sends Alyosha to the Eurovision Song Contest

Tonight, the Ukrainian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 was held. Twenty acts competed and in the end the SMS voters and jury decided to send Alyosha to Oslo with the song To Be Free written by O. Kucher and B. Chykalyuk.

Results

There was a tie for first place between Alyosha and Masha Sobko when the jury and SMS votes were combined. According to the recent published rules of the national selection that in the event of a tie the jury would have the casting vote over which act will represent the Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest. They chose Alyosha. Previously selected candidate for the Ukraine Vasyl Lazarovych came 7th.

esctoday.com poll results

The esctoday.com poll voters did not agree with the choice. Alyosha finished third among the the twenty participants with 8.1% of the votes. The clear poll winner was Vasyl Lazarovych with 27.5% of the votes.

esctoday.com national final awards 2010

The 2010 esctoday.com National Final Awards will be held between April and May, which means between the national final season and the Eurovision Song Contest. We will repeat the same format with two rounds for nominations which was used this year - you can read how it works here. However, this time the individual polls for each country will always be held right after the national final, when the entries are still fresh. You can vote for your favourite performance not to qualify in the Ukrainian national final here and for your favourite song not to qualify here.

In 2009, Ukraine was represented by Svetlana Loboda, who finished sixth in the second semi final and twelfth in the final with her song Be my Valentine! (Anti-crisis girl). In 2010, the country will compete in the second semi final of the Eurovision Song Contest on 27th May.

Now the NF season's come to an end, we can say that 2010's won't be the worst ESC (remember 2007 when the means to get points was to look like a transvestite and perform the most horrible song and show).
My prediction for this year's final is:
1 Slovakia
2 Norway
3 Greece
4 Poland
5 Switzerland
6 Denmark
7 Croatia
8 Portugal
9 Iceland
10 Armenia
11 Romania
12 Cyprus
13 Israel
14 Turkey
15 Latvia
16 Georgia
17 Malta
18 Lithuania
19 United kingdom
20 Estonia
21 Macedonia
22 Russia
23 Germany
24 France
25 Spain

The song is a bit dull, but I like the singer. Good voice. :)

@ Alyson Wunderland

Well, obviously it's just misunderstanding, which is very easy on the web like this... or atleast I hope it was just that.

I'm really against the division and that's why I'm quick to react when I see comments that are speaking in terms like that... maybe sometimes to quick but I'm just being honest.

Read his older posts.

I won't go into that. There's more than 450 posts here already and I'd rather be wrong than read through all of it. But somehow that doesn't go well with the impression I have of Daniel. Maybe he had a bad day, or maybe you just misunderstood each other. I'll never know! :D

@ Alyson Wunderland

Read his older posts. I didn't want to make this a "division", that work is made greatly by others on this page... with that I rest my case.

I don't think the UK final can be considered a "normal" final and Germany basically did a Idol type of show, with more focus on inner market than on ESC... but I usually judge effort in the products (songs) and presentation in ESC... and not so much in the pre-seletions, but obviously these might make a hint of effort aswell... but not necessarily

Do you think western countries send quality entries and put much effort?

Yeah! But they don't always deserve to win. I guessed the winner in 2007, 2008 and 2009 but in 2006 I wasn't anywhere near. I tend to like entries from Russia, UK, Slovenia, France, Denmark and I rarely like the songs from Greece, Portugal, Ukraine, Sweden and Austria. Does that make me western or eastern? Your taste seems very much eastern, your favourite was Timoteij in the Swedish final and you also like Zlata in the Ukrainian final, both very eastern ethnic style. Do you also like Horehronie? I don't agree at all that it's a east/west divide in effort, look at the Nordic selection processes! Week after week with shows and plenty of songs. Germany too. That's more effort than Russia did, for example. So only France and Switzerland with internal selection can be said to be effortless (but I think internal selection sometimes gives a better entry so that's okay), and Ireland, UK, Spain, Portugal had normal one night national finals, same as many eastern and central countries.

But my point was that you made this into a battle between countries. You assumed that Daniel would defend The UK's countries efforts with teeth and nails simply because he is British and I don't think that's true. I live in the middle of western Europe, I don't see much of this kind of attitude. I can imagine it might be more prevalent in the east, but I don't go there so I don't really know. It certainly doesn't sound like British thinking to me.

Let's see who's today's removal and replacement.

It will be nice to go online tomorrow and learn about tomorrow morning's new Ukrainian representative.

Ah, no? You say there will be no further chance after today? Too bad :P

Some (quite a few) people might as well lose their jobs anb gain public contempt and rejection for playing with artists, the general public, and a country's reputation in ESC.

@ Angelic Loves Kenan & Kanye West- All Falls Down

Well the replacement came after the replacement of the NTU management, so it couldn't have come earlier unfortunately. He was connected with the old NTU management remember? So obviously they would have not replaced him.

@New in Town

I understand what your saying. You don't like how he was selected and that is fair enough. Alot of people myself included don't like this "it is not what you know, but who you know" principle.

However, don't think it would have been wise to replace him a bit earlier???

This new selection is similar to revising for an exam only the night before and then gaining a rubbish grade due to the lack of preparation :P

@ Alyson Wunderland

Well i'm from the west and I think most western countries doesn't send good enough entries...

and if you're not open to other region's music, then for sure ESC is not the right place to go...

I thought it was a place to bring Europe together and not the opposite...

Do you think western countries send quality entries and put much effort? Well maybe it's a matter of taste, I think it's very often not the case so obviously they won't get votes either from the east...

But last year western song got plenty of votes... maybe because some also started to pay attention again... and why is that? One can only speculate but I think it is because the east has come with a new flavor of effort that maybe is also making the western to finally realize that they should do it aswell.

It's almost funny that a song contest that was designed to bring Europe together now divides it so bitterly among so many of us! Many of has have forgotten (or ignore) the fact that it's about the song. Not the country, not the act.
