Toto Cutugno's 15 Sanremo entries

We all know that 1990 Eurovision winner (and 1991 Eurovision co-host) Salvatore - aka Toto - Cutugno loves Sanremo festival. Fact is that Sanremo doesn't really like him any longer as Toto's 15th participating song, Aeroplani, was eliminated by the 2010 jury at an early stage of the competition, thus didn't take part at the Grand final last Saturday evening.

Still, some days ago, Toto published a new CD + DVD including all of his Sanremo entries. Toto won the Italian song festival in 1980 with the song Solo noi. He placed second in 6 occasions, including 4 times in a row, between 1987 and 1990. He only reached 5th place with his international hit L'Italiano, in 1983.

Track list of the CD:

  • Aeroplani (2010)
  • Un falco chiuso in gabbia (2008)
  • Come noi nessuno al mondo (2005)
  • Faccia pulita (1997)
  • Voglio andare a vivere in campagna (1995)
  • Gli amori (1990)
  • Le mamme (1989)
  • Emozioni (1988)
  • Figli (1987)
  • Azzurra malinconia (1986)
  • Serenata (1984)
  • L'Italiano (1983)
  • Solo noi (1980)
  • Gran premio (with Albatros, 1977)
  • Volo AZ 504 (with Albatros, 1976)

The DVD includes all songs, but not the 2010 entry.

Well, let me give you an Italian idea about Toto Cutugno and Sanremo festival.

In our country, Cutugno is considered a "populistic" author and singer, with very low artistical capacities: his songs always were and are unoriginal and pimping. He got successful in the eighties with a terrible series of songs about love, parents, motherland, that in my country are still now joked. He admitted to create the song for Zagreb 1990 in a hour (and that's evident, whan you listen to it). As entertainer, it's terrible too (Rome 1991 showed it all over Europe). He was admitted to Sanremo in 2009 and this year especially because he just came out from a very bad disease. This year he sang completely out of tune.
About Sanremo, it'not a musical contest anymore. It's a great show full of anything (special guests that play and dance, protesting workers, provocations, gimmicks of any kind) where songs are just put on the edge. Televoting is now the only way to judge the songs and therefore young singers from talent-shows (whatever they sing), when loved by teengirls, or other terrific things are awarded. Last week 1st and 3rd place went to former winners of TV talent shows, and the 2nd place went to a song sung by a trio: an unknown tenor, an old, no more succesful singer "recycled" as TV popular entertainer, together with the young descendant of last exiliated Italian king (who already won "Dancing with th stars" last year...), the song was called "Italia amore mio", and told about the years the poor, young noble man had spent far from Italy because our laws didn't let you and his family in. Simply terrifying (especially if you think that the prince is so rich, that he lived in a castle in Switzerland but had houses all over the world, that his father was condamned for a murder in the '70s in Corsica). Obviously, the really valid songs are usually eliminated before... But, you know, RAI still keeps on preferring to spend the best part of its budget on Sanremo festival rather than leave a little part to come back to Eurovision...

@Chef d'Orchestre
That's exactly what they weren't, Sanremo 2010 songs were weak, and nothing is "too good" for Eurovision. Saying that just makes just not sound like a fan at all.

Musically speaking, Sanremo of course is way better. All music is live, for a start. Entries like that of Arisa, Malika Ayane, and Irene Grandi in Sanremo 2010 were simply too good for Eurovision.

Mr. Cutugno sang drastically off-key this year and was eliminated consequently. Quite surprisingly, as last year he participated too and was great. My favourite amongst all these Sanremo entries must be 'Gli amori' from 1990.

@drusus1
It seems it will be released on March, 2nd. You will be able to order it from amazon.com (where it's already available in pre-order, but that's pretty expensive : 26,99 USD !). For sure better offers will soon be available.

Sabi, you sound like a disrespectful, bratty youngster for saying that. His time is not over til he's dead and the newcomers are nothing to write home about.

Sanremo Festival was terrible this year. A disgusting, chaotic, disrespectful circus and not many good songs at all. I can't see how that festival has any more "dignity" or "class" than Eurovision, not anymore that's for sure. They should just return to us because Sanremo Festival has sunk way below ESC standards now.
