Alexander Rybak went on to win the 54th Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow, Russia in May 2009 with a landslide victory. Alexander sang “Fairytale”, the song he wrote walking in the mountains on the Norwegian west coast, a song inspired by Norwegian folk music.

“Fairytale”, became a major hit in Europe and was #1 on most European i-tunes charts the following week. It also reached top 3 on the European chart, #1 in Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Russia and #2 in Ireland, Finland and the Netherlands and Alexander’s performance from the Eurovision Song Contest had more than 10 million hits on YouTube within a few weeks.

After appearing so far at the the national finals in Finland and Norway, semi-final in Azerbaijan he is set to appear at the following National finals too:

  • February 21st, Ljubljana, Slovenia
  • March 07th, Moscow, Russia
  • March 12th, London, United Kingdom
  • March 13th, Stockholm, Sweden

One of the favourites to win the Portuguese finals in March, and already a growing fan favourite if it wins the ticket to Oslo, Catarina Pereira "Canta por mim", listen to it here and make up your own mind:

@ Kevin
Whether it's a major news or not, depends on individuals :) For turks Hadise for example is major news to them, for us not. For you, the british news is major, but for me not. :D

@ Night Editor

Oh yes, there's the problem of Coronation Street but maybe more people will switch over to The One Show Eurovision Special at 9pm? I think there will be a rubbish drama series called Single Married Other on ITV 1 and with my plan to end voting 10 minutes into the show it could allow the Corrie fans to get their votes in..

The BBC should employ me Lol :)

@ vizzy because it is major news for british fans (which make up a large proportion of the fans on this site) and we don't have our own article because we have had 2 small bits of news

and the difference is we are just talking about what we think BBC will do - no one has been shouting "UK WILL WIN: ROYAME-UNI DOUZE POINTS" etc
if you want to talk about other parts of the article about Rybak, be our guest...but this is not hypocritical.

I wonder if how people would've reacted if these UK spams were Turkish-related news.....lol lol double standards

@ Matthew Noonan. Very possible. It wouldn't be the first time the BBC has buried the national selection show by putting it against Coronation Street (the UK's no1 show for those not from these parts on Fridays at 7.30 and 8.30pm on ITV1)

Silent Wittness is on repeats, so that slot is possible. They prerecord a lot of performances so they stay in the allotted time.

I have a great idea for the UK NF night scheduling for the BBC...

7.00pm The One Show Eurovision Special (Auditions are shown, 3 finalists perform the song, Alexander Rybak performs, voting opens, online and telephone)
8.00pm EastEnders (Very popular British TV show or soap as we call it)
8.30pm The One Show Eurovision Special Results (10 minutes into the show, voting closes. Sugababes perform. A jury made up of 5 music experts and 5 former Eurovision entrants give 8, 10, 12 points to their favourites. Then web voting is announced in 8, 10, 12 style and the same with phone voting. Winner announced. Winner reprise
9.00pm Silent Witness (Drama show)

What d'ya think?

Great single. Hopefully not as good as what Pete Waterman's going to unveil on the same show!

It won't be part of the one show otherwise there'll be 2 production teams doing it.

The more I think about this so called BBC Final the more I fear that it is going to be part of the One Show which goes out every night at 7pm. It that case maybe three singers would perform Waterman's song, and then Alexander Rybak would sing followed by the results as that show lasts only for 30 minutes normally. If this were to be the case then there would be no audience at all!!! Let's hope this will not be the case but it sounds more and more like it ...especially given that most of the British fans will be in Sweden that weekend for the Swedish Final instead!!!

BBC should ask Sugababes to perform in the national final for Jade's sake & success.

Sara@

But the broadcaster as to pay, and I don't know if RTP is able to do it, since they are spending many this year (for a good reason of course), but it would be nice for Portugal to enter in this kind of things. I would like to see in FC 2010, Vânia Fernandes, Flor-de-Lis, maybe Sabrina, why not?, rybak, and three representatives for ESC 2010, that, with a great stage, and a gift from RTP, that would be finishing FC with fireworks on top if the Campo Pequeno, is more than a dream could imagine, that woyld be a great victory for Portugal

Alexander is really busy. I wonder how many concerts he has had since he won last year. Gosh! I can't believe he still has any energy left. I'm impressed. Everyone wants him present. :) I saw him in the webcast of the semi for Azerbaijan and he had a really great mini concert there :) Right Marko? Well done Alex ;)

Marko:
You said you haven't anything against him anymore, so why do you laugh of Marky's comment? Traitor..hehe. I told you that Marky should've watched the Azerbaijan semi...he would've changed his mind about Alexander, just like you did :P
