Contestants revealed
60th Sanremo festival with two Eurovision veterans
As usual, artists who already received the trophy in the past try their luck again. This is the case for Toto Cutugno, who won the festival in 1980 with Solo noi and won the Eurovision Song Contest ten years later with Insieme: 1992. Another Eurovision veteran is on the 2010 Sanremo list, Enrico Ruggeri. The man won its first festival in 1987 with two others, Gianni Morandi and Umberto Tozzi performing the song Si puo dare di più. He received another Sanremo trophy in 1993 with Mistero, three months before representing Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in Millstreet, where he placed 12th with his entry Sole d'Europa.

@chris p,i didn't mean anything bad, towards you.i disapprove of the whole "Big 4" set up totally.
Jim Hegarty:
I never said Italy can't participate. I said I don't want them offered a place in the final automatically just to get them to take part. Italy (even if they wanted to return) cannot just wander in from the wilderness and expect that.
I totally agree,get rid of the "Big 4" and certainly don't let Russia,be a part of a "Big 5".old timers like Ireland,The Netherlands,and Sweden,should object.it's unfair.it makes the contest a "Free passage" for MONEY,and therefore not a "CONTEST".
In the newcomers category two more Eurovision names try to enter the Festival: Miodio (San Marino 2008) with the song "Perdo contatto" and Roberto Meloni (Latvia 2007 with Bonaparti.lv and Latvia 2008 with Pirates of the Sea) with the song "Per un domani"
Russia has a guarantee of getting to the final - neighbours and diaspora. Over half their votes have come from a dozen countries
Why let Russia be part of a "Big 5"? They're already always in the final anyway, lol.
Wouldn't it be more desireable to get rid of the Big 4 somehow?
@ws,re:Russia,to be part of a "Big 5".i read on the website all kinds of everything.ie.they say that from 2011,Russia,will get automatic entry to the final,by being a part of a "Big 5".i think it's unfair.they should even get rid of the "Big 4".
san remo is boring
@ Zanic Night
Oh my god you haven't get it? EBU isn't only an organisation for ESC. It is also an organisation for many other European companies and networks that broadcast other shows - not just ESC.
In ESC, Russia may contribute more - but in EBU overall - Spain contributes thousand times more. PFFT.
Italy is my best ESC nation. I still believe they deserved to win the whole thing more than 2 times.
I asked because Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands are the biggest contributors after the BIG-group. And I suppose any of these three countries would not be amused by a promotion for Russia.
Sorry but I was wondering how it assists in integrating the semi-finals of the selection Belarus. Thanks
It was proposed be the EBU..
but It probably will not happen. Cause Russia contribites more to the EBU than Spain does. So they think Russia should be a part of the big 5..
But Since Russia is huge its normal that they could provide alot and putting it into comparrison with Spain, Spain is actualy giving more if u understand. So is France, Germany and the UK.
@Jim Hagerty, where did you hear that Russia will be big 5?
you know i just wondered what would happen if a big 4 country won, cause that would leave one less entry in the final... i guess either the 5th biggest contrubuter (russia, sweden maybe?) would get a pass for one year, or the years 2nd place song (which would be more fair i must admit) cause i know germany is trying for a win badly (and with stefan raab i think they could) the uk is very optimistic after coming 5th with a boring but well performed song, and i guess spain will pull all the stocks out after there bad result. france i dont think will, i guess there still not to happy there biggest star came 8th. For some reason, i think bulgaria who know when they try they can do well (2007) estonia who will try again after this years 6th, and part of me thinks slovakia will want to do well this year and try hard. have to wait and see i guess
Well if Italy did come back, I'm sure that they wuld be part of the big 5. RAI is a very large organisation and that would mean a large fee and therefore Big 5 status. It has nothing to do with being loyal to the contest, just money
@chris p.why shouldn't Italy,be allowed to be part of a "Big 5",after all Russia,is gona be in a "Big 5"from 2011.Italia,was at Eurovisions birth, and has every right to return.I don't approve of the "Big 4/5"arrangement at all.but Italy, has every right to return.either in anyway RIA ,choose.
Dear europeans, don't apply any fair login on RAI action, as long as we have this governament, Italy will NEVER return, not even France, UK, Germay and Spain are in the top4 and Italy gets offered a big 5 status, in Italy only people aged 35- 40 + know eurovision, not even gays know eurovision...here people knows only what's inside our borderds
I think i'm correct in saying that Italy would be an automatic entrant, as part of a big 5, if and when they return to the contest. But would this mean that there would be 26 countries in the final?
The Sanremo seems to have lower viewing figures each year. This, coupled with more promotion of the the ESC, could lead to more public interest in eurovision in Italy.
But i agree with what people are saying below in relation to a big 4 country winning. These automatic entrants, along with the other western countries will have take the ESC more seriously and eventually win the contest on a more regular basis in order to make eurovision seem like a worthwhile event for the Italian broadcaster RAI to consider entering again.
Only time will tell.
I agree with Layla, why not Spain? We're in our 50th consecutive participation, and we've had 41 years without a victory, isn't it our time?
I'd like Italy to return if they want to. By all means encourage them to return, but I do not want them offered a "big 5" position just to get them to enter.
Since Italy doesn't want to participate, I couldn't care less about their return. I care more about countries that do want to participate but can't because they lack the funds, like Andorra, San Marino and Montenegro.
the EBU could invite them back as part of a big 5, but then other countries like sweden for example may think that was unfair, since sweden has been enthusiastic participants for many years. it would be great to have italy back though.
wtf? I thought it was for their confirmation but
we have to wait at least 5 or 6 years (if we want to be optimistic) to see Italy in ESC. Italy has always ben a stange country, and no it's even stanger: poor democracy, corruption, odd leaders, odd parties...this all lead to push Italy away from any international interest, our governament would be very happy if no one knows anything about whta happens abroad. We have that Sanremo trash, where a man takes part only because he belongs to the ex royal italian family (emanuele di savoia), we have singers that don't sell a single record but are there anyway (pupo), we have singers who have absurd political messages in their songs (povia), among them there are 2 or 3 names who deserve some respect (Irene Grandi, Malika Ayane, Noemi). But I can't stand a sanremo final with only 8 or so songs and 4 hour show...I don't watch sanremo
Toto Cutugno can sing but his Eurovision presentation skills left a lot to be desired and that's putting it very politely
WHO CARES ABOUT SAN REMO , THIS SO CALLED CONTEST WILL BE NO LONGER IN A YEAR OR SO , AS TV FIGURES ARE DROPPING LIKE RAIN DROPS IN NOVEMBER , THEY HAVE A MUSIC INDUSTRY PROBLEM ALSO , AS THE MUSIC COMEING OUT FROM THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS POOR INDEED. SO CAN'T SEE ITALY BACK IN EUROVISION FOR SOME TIME YET , SORRY
