Switzerland: Internal selection for Eurovision 2010

SRG SSR idée suisse, the swiss broadcasters for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 have launched their selection process for Oslo next year.

Switzerland are looking for songs of "an international standard." There will be public invitation to submit entries as well as the broadcasters inviting artists from the music industry to participate.

The search for songs may extend across other media such as internet and radio. Proposals must be submitted by the 22nd of October 2009 at the latest. There will be no requirements regarding the language of the song's lyrics.

Performers must meet the following criteria:

  1. Television and stage experience. (live performances)
  2. They must have made at least one video.
  3. They must have released at least one CD and had it placed among the top 50 in an official chart.

Possible performers may also be approached directly by SRG.

Performers, composers and lyricists need not be Swiss citizens or resident in Switzerland. A national jury will decide which artist(s) will represent Switzerland with which song at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 and their selection may or may not involve public consultation.

Songs should be sent to:

Schweizer Fernsehen,
Redaktion Show,
Eurovision Song Contest,
Fernsehstrasse 1-4,

@ Lina. Emel was born in Switzerland. She became famous with this song:

It sounds like the 1980s :)

personal i thing each singer must be citizen of the countrey who represent, beacuse if countreys start to send singers from other countreys just to get votes then ESC will be one big salat, for example is not good one singer from Estonia to represent Albania under Albania flag, and i dont beleave that countreys dont have good local singer to represent they r countrey and they must to "importation" singer to represent them to ESC.

@ Marko:

I was not speaking about the lady, I was speaking of René Baumann himself.

I think having internal selections is a drawback in most cases. Having live studio shows and national final may definitely help lift the interest for the competition (if done well, like in Sweden and Norway the latest years - interest have always been relatively high here - but has risen the last years due to a change in the concept).
Another definitive advantage is that in a national final the audience and the televoters will see and vote for what sounds and looks good on stage!!! I am pretty sure this years winner would not be such a clear winner if only heard on radio...
I would love Switzerland to do well again. And even though I am generally a bit sceptic to internal selections - good luck!!

Switzerland has a choice of four beautiful languages to sing in - German, French, Italian and Romansch, so why on earth do vthey choose English almost every year. I am still cursing the fool who made up the free language rule.

I don't understand why Swiss Broadcasters are obstinated to select their representative in internal choice since there has been no result for ten years??? Moreover, Switzerland should sing in 3 languages: French, German, Italian, why there's no more televised shows to select the Swiss representative with these 3 languages as before??? Anyway, Switzerland was better before 2000's

hm I disagree, the suisse performance this year was a great dissapointment. No voice and charisma. The same goes for DJ Bobo. The Eurovision performance marked a low point in his career. So I don't think the official requirement ensure anything... remember Celine won without have a hit in Switzerland and Lara was totally unknown in 1988.
Switzerland will have a hard time finding a way into a Eurovision final. The same goes for Austria and at some point Germany, only that Germany has it's Big4 status. But if not big4, Germany would never reach a final, though sending a few good enough entries over the last years.

despite of the results, DJ Bobo, and Lovebugs has great successs.... you don't have to win to became famous....
remember Julio Iglesias, Cliff Richard, Lara Fabian, Natacha St-Pier, Nana Mouscouri, Brainstorm and and and..... but it's extremly important for a little country to have this podium and show to the rest of Europe or the world, that Swiss Pop/Rock exists. Participation is a must. And became famous without having to spend money to organize it's interesting, too :-)

a robbed masterpiece last year (no it wasn't a bad performance, romania, turkey, greece, that's bas performance!)

i don't think internally is as wrong as what people claim. It did give us Patricia Kaas. We prefer big finals coz we love eurovisions, but swiss people like many people in western countries don't care. why would the swiss channel pays so much for a final no one will watch and the ones who do might vote for some rubbish songs like it OFTEN happens in NF (estonia 8, norway 07... etc)

let's see what they can come up with, sad that their last top 10 place came from an estonian band!

Switzerland's song was fine, but it was way too anonymous for a contest where you only get to hear as much as 25 songs ONCE! Plus he wasn't very good live at the semi either.

I don't like that just anyone can represent Switzerland, that they don't even need to be citizens. And I think it didn't do them any good to select internally. It's also more fun with national finals than internal selections. It is more fair for the people to choose.

When do they learn, that internal selection is the wrong selection for our country?

We need good vocalists and we cant see them live with an internal selection.

@ Lily. I would be really happy if Emel Aykanat was representing Switzerland next year. She seems to love the contest...
