"So leaves on tiptoe..."
Belgium: Marc Moulin of Telex dies of cancer
"So leaves on tiptoe a great mind, funny and refined, a brilliant "touch-a-tout" who took pleasure to satisfy all his curiosities, while always taking care to generously share his passion for arts and popular culture" is written on the artist's site. The Belgian jazz pianist, composer and producer, chose to leave quietly in a private funeral, while his death was announced officially days later.
In 1980 Telex participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Euro-vision. Their ambition to finish last failed when Portugal awarded Belgium with 10 points. In the end, Telex finished 17th on 19 participants. Nevertheless, the Euro-vision act became one of the highlights in the Eurovision Song Contest archive of the last 50 years. Moulin also worked as a producer with other artists such as Philip Catherine, Lio, Alain Chamfort and Sparks. As a musician and composer, Moulin was still very active until last year. His last album called "I am you" was released in January 2007 and also last year, he still performed regularly, partner site Belgovision.com reports.

I interviewed him a few times, and wrote sleeve notes for Telex. he really was quite exceptional. Here's my obit:

Oh I've just heard it. Tragic news.
Respect for a man who through his profound artistic intellect saw eurovision for what it is some 30 years ago. Telex's entry was nothing more than a brave assault up on the face of a clownish self-conceited ESC audience of the time.
I can quite appropriately picture Marc Moulin taking a photograph of us all in Moscow on May with a "Moskow Diskow" musical background. But unfortunately life proves once more that "we're all getting old".
RIP.
Je t'adore... Ella elle l'a
Dearst Mina, you have written:
"[....]When Ukraine sent a very bad song in 2005 they were 19th...unless you mean that in the last 2 years Ukrainians started travelling all around Europe just to vote for Eurovision..lol"
And i fully agree and i fully laughed my heart out. I think evey now and then these political and diaspora conspiracies become sometimes very ridiculous..
R.I.P
Love "Eurovision"! Both song and performance.
Although, if that had represented Ukraine in the last 2 years, it would've come in the top 5.
FACT.
And why is that a fact? Ukraine sent popular songs in the last 2 years...I might not have liked either but facts are facts.
When Ukraine sent a very bad song in 2005 they were 19th...unless you mean that in the last 2 years Ukrainians started travelling all around Europe just to vote for Eurovision..lol
But surely, you can't compare 'Euro-vision' to the winning entry that year: 'What's Another Year'.
Although, if that had represented Ukraine in the last 2 years, it would've come in the top 5.
FACT.
he's gone to the great ESC green room in the sky. A very memorable Belgian entry.
Very sad news.
marc, I agree with you that "Euro-vision" was too modern for ESC at the time and that the Belgian cuisine is the best one. I love Belgium
Yes Jonny, and the best JESC entry this year
And Belgium have the best JESC entry this year, by far
This is very sad news
And what about Kate Ryan ??? (Belgian too)
She rules the charts at the moment all over Europe.
And Marc... do you like the the beers or the bears, haha ??
When did you leave Belgium and why ?
RIP to this dude
On a more positive note Belgium is my favourite country in and out of esc!
I visited Ypres and that area generally last year, and Belgium is probably my favourite country in europe I have visited (apart from the UK lol
)
Belgium rulleezzz!
Dear Jan,
Always wellcome, as Dutch are always good fun,...but he I left Belgium quite some years ago myself. Do miss it sometimes, the friendliness, politeness, good bears (although I can find that over here aswell), the real nice size glases of vodka ( not like in UK, £5.5 for 2 cm of spirit), the chocolates (although Harrods sells that aswell, but about 3 times more expensive), the belgian chips (nothing like it),.... hmmmmm
@marc x
You have got the right to be proud of your beautiful country..
It has more than the Netherlands: you have the lowlands, the highlands (the Ardennes), 3 langueges.. beautiful cities
At least Belgium tried something different at the songcontest.. Telex was a very fine example
I am sorry that we do not have a friendly neighbourly voting attidude (like Cyprus and Greece), while most of the Dutchies are fond of the Belgian people. (And that is truly a fact. !!!)
Every year I keep my fingers crossed for NL and... yes Belgium and I am sure a lot of people from the Netherlands do too !
And musically: let's face it: Belgium had a leading part in the dance-scene of the 90's, so don't be to modest.. Belgium is also Europe's political host !!!
And the cuisines... of course you and I know they are the best.. (when can I move in.. ?)
I love Belgium !!!!!!
i find evridiki pretty progressive for the contemporary esc standards too. I just think electro pop does not yet belong to the preferences of the esc viewers. About the belgian cuisine..i do not know if i can agree or disagree on this..because i am not very familiar with it..but i think, greek cuisine is one of the best in the world....well too..:-)
I think Evridiki really killed her own song by her awkward performance. And to start Comme ci comme ca, wasn't a very strong song anyway. Belgium sent some very progressive entries and never any decent result. It's a shame. Than the juries were to blame, and now some other reasons. Belgium must be one of the least popular countries in the festival, no friends, no loyal neighbours, no immigrants,.... no Belgian restaurants spread all over Europe. Although Belgium has one of the best, if not best cuisines in the world. Hihaaa please let me be a bit chauvinistic aswell.....
i liked this song a lot, it was original and not at all main stream for the standards of the 80's esc..I liked this one together with rendez-vous, pas de deux, 1983(i agree with mina on this). I think Belgium has tried a bit back then to modernise the average esc entry but not with much success. Now that i come to think about it, electro pop has never been very popular in the ESC..When i think of the disaster with Evrididki and comme ci comme ca in 2006...
RIP....Telex were one of the first ESC comedy acts - at a time when comedy was really funny, not something like " Leto svet " !
For some reason I like that song, I think 17th place was too low for it.
I'm very sorry for Marc Moulin
RIP Marc - Telex were BRILLIANT and way ahead of their time...
So sad to hear this...
RIP
1980 was the year I "discovered" the ESC and Telex too.
I really loved the song because it was so "different" !
Telex had a big hit in Italy too, with "Moscow Disco". After that success, we were thrilled to see them in the ESC. This is so sad news. RIP Marc.
I really like that ,way too modern for its time, Belgian entry... Together with Rendez-vous and Sanomi my 3 favorite Belgian entries.... RIP
