2,000 candidates queue in Madrid

Spain: A new voice for Eres tú

Juan Carlos Calderón, composer of the Spanish Eurovision entry in 1973 Eres tú -amongst others-, sarted yesterday a round of auditions in Madrid to find the best voice for a new version of that memorable song performed successfully by Mocedades in Luxembourg.

The singers school Academia del Arte, in Madrid, is currently hosting these auditions. The project came to light thanks to the collaboration between Juan Carlos Calderón, the director of record label El Séptimo Sello Records, Ciro Cruz González and Academia del Arte with the aim of finding the best and most suitable voice for a new version of Eres tú, the song performed by Mocedades in 1973 which brought a valuable second place for Spain back then.

Two thousand candidates have applied to become the new voice of the song. All of them had to send their personal facts first to enter the auditions stage. Juan Carlos Calderón stated that he does not know "what this song has in it, but it has to be something when it's so international and demands to be sung by the people". Calderón loves to find new talents, just like he did with Mocedades or the Mexican star Luis Miguel. "We have to find fresh ideas in new artists", Calderón concluded.

Juan Carlos Calderón is not just the composer of Eres tú, which sold over 1 million singles in Spain, was declared one of the 10 most influential songs of the 20th century and was played in the United States schools to teach Spanish language. The Santander-born musician and producer also wrote Tú volverás by Sergio y Estíbaliz (Spain 1975), La fiesta terminó by Paloma San Basilio (Spain 1985) and Nacida para amar by Nina (Spain 1989).

Yes, there were some accusations of plagiarism at the time. Especially the beginning of the song is very similar, and even now when I am listening to the Slovene song, I think there is some truth in it.

I love "Eres tu", I still like listening to it from time to time... so emotional! Definitely one of Spain's best entries ever!

Btw, some people say that "Eres tu" is quite similar to the Yugoslavian entry from 1966. It's called "Brez besed" (Without words) and is sung by Slovenian singer Berta Ambroz.

The early '70 were the golden years of Spain at the ESC. Our problem with Eurovision is not only the lack of interest of TVE, it is also the current dissapointing situation of the Spanish music market. We have excellent performers but mediocre song writers.

Eres tu - The best spanish entry ever IMO, and one of the best songs in ESC. What a pitty that spain has gone so far away from the goods entry that it used to send to what we here from them in the last years. Spain has such a great potential, why on earth TVE cannot send us something decent?

All the songs mentioned are clearly the more sophisticated Spanish entries...

I suppose he's looking for a newcomer, otherwise I'd suggest Sergio Dalma, he'd sing this song in a wonderful way, I'm sure.

All time favorite but I also like his 3 other songs.... especially La fiesta termino.... Paloma was and still is, one of Spain's best performers.

Eres Tu was a fantastic song, and my personal favourite of the year, and one I still play!
