2009 season starts already

Svante Stockselius met 2009 organisers in Moscow

Svante Stockselius, Executive Superviser of the Eurovision Song Contest, met with the organisers of the 2009 edition of the competition in Moscow for the first time. Host broadcaster Channel One was informed about the outlines of the project, provisional dates were set and the venue for the contest was discussed.

Stockselius told after his visit: "The Eurovision Song Contest is an extremely challenging project, but I am confident that Channel One will put together a production of the highest level." The preliminary dates for the contest were set on 12th, 14th and 16th May, which means that the contest is supposed to take place one week earlier than in 2008.

Channel One announced the Olimpiisky Indoor Arena as possible venue for the competittion. The stadium was built for the 1980 summer olympics and can host up to 16,000 people during television events. Of course, ticket sales will start not before winter.

Russia won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2008 with Dima Bilan and Believe and will therefore host the contest for the first time in 2009.

The ever silliest winner of the ESc and the biggest unfairness of the world happened in 2001 and 2002 when Estonia and Latvia won with that... songs?

oh, yess please!! let us have a jury again, which was always soo objective......LOOOL...the silliest wimmer ever of the ESc and the biggest unfairness of the world happened during the jury era of the ESC. And i read recently an article on the "Süddeutsche Yeitung", a quality big paper in Germany, that there are serious allegations, that Spain and Franco had bought their 1969 victory, by bying votes from juries around Europe..and pretty other small scandals...Jury in the ESC? NO THANX!!

LOL yes, they do, but you know, it's easier to spot people who have mobiles than people who don't. The adults all have them, but not all the kids.

Well Mine, like I explained to you before, I am very often in Greece and I must say in all honestly that never in my life I have seen so many mobiles. Literally everyone is on those bloody mobiles. Even on the beach, people (young aswell as old) are using mobiles...

Mina Carnation [51405]

marc,
not all kids have cell phones, at least not here in Greece. Even at 12/13 years old, they don't all have cell phones. It's a percentage of about 30% that have cell phones.

But that would take votes away from all countries, so I guess it would be fair.

Mina, there is a big difference though between you voting 5 times for Russia because you like the song or Russians, Greeks, Turcs, Latvians, etc living in a Western European ountry, just voting for their own country. And not just 5 times. Look at countries like Ireland, Belgium, Switserland, Germany, Netherlands with huge amounts of immigrants.... and than tell me it's still justified. If you start the 1 vote per phone principle, all of those immigrants can only vote once for their own country and so the results should be more justified. And your argument that in family with 5 kids, there could be disagreement who to vote for, doesn't make sense. What family with 5 kids does not have a mobile for every member of the family. Kids start getting their first mobile at around 9....

My last word on this topic -

Whatever the system -- it may not be Russia winning....
But SURELY - it won't help the UK or any of the 'big4' to improve with their current approach

Calm down BURR
In my last comment I just used your standards. Just because you can't have a rational conversation with someone, it doesn't reflect on me whatsoever.

I can judge all I like BURR I don't need to ask for your permission. I guess by your standards though that would mean your opinion doesn't count either.

Also, as you can see for yourself, mina and I were having quite a lengthy discussion on the topic and I have had the discussion with many people on this site, so if you are not interested please do not try and speak for everyone else because you don't.

Who are you to judge?
Anyway, noone interested

So you agree with me that's the same everywhere :P

Anyway, even though I believe that at least for the winner every year, the most popular song wins, I agree there should be some changes so the western countries can stop feeling that the system is unfair for them.

(Imagine if next year there's 50/50 jury televoting and one vote per phone and Russia wins again...LOLLLLL I admit I'd like to see that if only for a laugh :P)

I think for the most part it is the same here with maybe a few exceptions. I know in the UK there was a bit of unrest in the X Factor when a Scottish guy Leon one over the Welsh favourite Rhydian because it was considered that the Scots were voting in force for their guy and well, there are more Scots than there are Welsh people! Also, in past seasons regional contestants from Ireland (Conway Sisters) and Scotland (MacDonald Brothers) for example have always managed to outlast their welcome because of home backing.
I think it is the same for American Idol where I don't think they have ever had a winner from outside the Southern states!

I liked Russia entry in 2006 too but for me it just couldn't beat the mighty Lordi! Also, I think if patriotically isn't a word it should be. Spell check doesn't seem to have a problem with it though!

Mina Carnation [51405]

LOL Danny,
our tastes are so different! I hated the Russian song in 2007 :D

About how a song gets the most votes..well..it's not elections. I don't think that 1000 individual votes should count more than 100x10 votes by 100 people.

I mean, that's the same for all contests based on televoting, isn't it?

How do you vote in Britain's got talent? I suppose the same way the Americans vote for the American Idol and the same way we vote for our talent contests and our Eurovision Final. At least in Greece there are no restriction as to how many phonecalls you can make for a contestant.

The only reason we're thinking different in Eurovision is because we're programmed to think different...on a country level and not on a song level..so we kinda take it more...patriotically (is there such a word? :P)

DannyT [43795]

@ mina
When you're saying that because you are just willing to drop more money on your votes does that really mean you should be getting those extra votes? There may be a difference in that bribing a jury and paying for extra votes are unfair in different ways but they are still both unfair.

The result should be based on who gets the most votes from the most individual people, not the one that gets the most votes from a small group of people who vote a lot of times no matter what their motivation is, whether it is voting for their home country or voting for their favourite song.

Putting it another way I feel that a song that gets 1000 votes from 1000 people should get a higher placing in a country's points than a song that gets 1100 votes from 100 people as it has managed the broader appeal.

PS Russia should never have won in 2006. 2007 I could accept but not 2006 :P

Also, BURR your comment was completely redundant, kind of like the comment you made about how the UK scored from only 2 countries each year for the past four years. Do you remember that, when you were just plain wrong?

Mina Carnation [51405]
Sat 28 Jun 2008 20:32:09

Danny,
there's a difference between a person who likes a song and votes for it and a country representative who buys out a jury..for one thing, the second is illegal..LOL

About the ''just because you are willing to vote more often doesn't mean you like a song more than someone else''....no, but it means you really want that song/artist to win..for whatever reason.

In 2005 I voted 3 times..one for Malta (Angel), one for Switzerland (Cool Vibes) and one for Spain (Brujeria)....in 2006 I voted for Russia, Never let you go, once..those 4 songs were songs I liked.
Last year I voted once for Hungary (Unsubstantial Blues), also a song I liked.
This year I voted for Russia 5 times...why? Because, besides the fact that I loved the song, I really wanted the Russia to win because I had considered it unfair that they didn't win back in 2006.
So I voted more for that reason...someone else might do it because it's their country and they want it to do well...there are so many reasons that someone may vote more than once.
