Biography
The singer's real name is Marie Buys-Kwakman. She first came to prominence in the early 60's as Marietje Kwakman. A young girl then she sang the immortal song Laat Het Altijd Vrede Zijn in duet with the Volendams Mannenkoor, a choir from the place she was born. It would be another 20 odd years, before Maribelle would return into the spot lights again, using her stage name now. The occasion would be the Dutch final for the Eurovision Song Contest 1981. Although Maribelle had to let Linda Williams go, she had a huge hit with her Marionette. Shortly afterwards Maribelle joined the group Spryng. When in 1983 Anny Schilder left BZN, a popular band in the Netherlands, Maribelle was asked to replace her. In fact Maribelle auditioned for the job and even did some shows with the group. Maribelle's heart belonged a solo career however and she returned to the Dutch final once again. This time she made it to the Eurovision stage and although Ik Hou Van Jou didn't get a high placing during the actual contest, a lot of other artists covered the song. The best known versions by Gordon (Dutch final 1990), Dana Winner and an English version by Engelbert Humperdinck (A Little In Love). After the contest Maribelle disappeared from view once again to return in 1993 with another string of hits including hits like Esperanza and Ik Wil Jou.
Peter van Asten and Richard De Bois are very popular songwriters, best known for their work for the Dolly Dots.
