Biography
This was the first time Ireen Sheer (born 25/02/49 in Romford, UK) appeared on the Eurovision stage. Before she entered she was part of the British group Family Dogg who had hits with A Way Of Life and Sympathy (with Steve Rowland) all around Europe in the late-60's and early-70's. Relocating to Germany in the early-70's she started a hugely successful solo career that brought her a hit in 1973 with Goodbye Mama. Ireen Sheer also appeared in the 1978 and the 1985 contests for Germany and Luxembourg respectively.
Arranger and producer Charles Blackwell conducted the orchestra for Luxembourg in 1974. But that wasn't his only connection with the ESC. Over the years he worked with a lot of ESC artists, starting as early as 1963 with Kathy Kirby (UK 1965) on her singles Dance On, Secret Love, You're The One and No One's Gonna Hurt You Anymore. Most success he found with his productions for Françoise Hardy (Monaco 1963), who he met in 1964 and produced through to 1968. Therefore sadly missing out on L'Amour S'En Va, Tous Les Garçons Et Les Fils and Comment Te Dire Adieu, her biggest hits outside France. Charles Blackwell was also involved in an 80's film called Alice, based on Alice In Wonderland. Being a musical film it included many singers. One of them was Lulu (UK 1969). But both film and soundtrack were barred from a release because of lack of money.
