My story
Vasken Davidian
Haven't missed a single Eurovision Song Contest since 1975...
Diasporan Armenian Londoner extremely excited that my ethnic and cultural homeland, Armenia, at long last, is taking part in this great contest. My musical tastes tend to be biased towards the eastern Mediterranean: a good ethnic piece from the Balkans, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Armenia gets me every time.
Native tongue: Western Armenian
Fluent in: English, Greek
Very basic: Spanish, Turkish
2009
Extremely excited by France this year. Finally a song at Eurovision that reflects my musical tastes and am sure will be listening to again and again.
Though initially sceptical I like the Armenian song this year - am a great fan of Inga and Anush and have their CDs and seen them live in London - but felt the arrangement/presentation at the Armenian selection was a mess... the new version works much better but wish it was kept in Armenian... it is a very typical Armenian song, great party rhythms to hold hands to and dance around in circles...
I also like Israel, Albania, Estonia, Moldova and Norway as well as our song My Time... again finally a decent song from the UK.
Both Greece and Turkey (my favourite countries musically) are a disappointment this year... Sakis is great but the song is dull... also Hadise's song is a weak, insipid version of Helena Paparizou. The Georgian song is boring and Azerbaijan should just send the instrumental bits of their song which are great - the rest is pretty awful. Don't like Russia either.
Still getting to know the other songs but thus far France and Israel definitely have my vote this year!
2008
Israel was the best song, followed by Turkey, Serbia, Armenia and Portugal... voted for these five. Overall best song for me was San Marino which unfortunately came last/failed to qualify.
My favourite songs in 2008 (the order will probably change but not the top spot!) :
SAN MARINO 12 points
Serbia 10 points
Armenia 8 points
Israel 7 points
Turkey 6 points
Portugal 5 points
Iceland 4 points
Cyprus 3 points,
Switzerland 2 points
Ukraine 1 point
Trying to fit France and the Netherlands in there somewhere as well...
Traditionally favourite countries have been France and Luxembourg... especially when they sent good, solid ballads sang by amazing female vocalists.
Favourite ESC winner: Anne Marie David, Tu te Reconnaitras, Luxembourg (1973)
Favourite songs (randomly): Je suis l'enfant soleil, Lane Moje, Dinle, Anthropos kai gw, Khorepse, Olou tou kosmou i elpida, Mono i aghapi, Ik jou van jou, Israel 1977, too many to mention...
