My story
Aaron in UK
Hi everyone. I've been following the Eurovision Song Contest since 1988. It was by accident that I video recorded the Lausanne contest and I've been hooked ever since. I've seen Celine Dion win, Ireland dominate the 1990's, the emergence of the Balkan and Baltic countries. The contest has changed and evolved into a visual and energetic contest. Every contest throughout the decades has told its story. I think it's wrong for people to say Eurovision has changed for the worse. I think it's very vibrant and captivating.
I watched the final dress rehearsal of the 1998 contest held in Brimingham, United Kingdom. I was taken with the venue and the artistes. On the night Dana International won, I actually got to speak with her in the hotel after the contest.
The Eurovision continues to go from strength to strength. 2005 was a memorable year; The Big 4 countries came in the Bottom 4 places. Greece won for the first time and some good songs (Ithought anyway) came nowhere (Austria, Lithunia, Bosnia-Herzegovina). I'm looking forward to the 2006 contest in Athens. I'm sure the Greeks will put on a spectacular show, after all, they hosted the Olympics in 2004.
However, I do believe that a fundamental debate is required to discuss the current voting procedure, allocation of points, number of countries, the number of contests per year. Just like the EU, the Eurovision needs to reshape itself.
