My first memories of the ESC are from 1977. My favourite won - France with Marie Myriam, L'oiseau et l'enfant. I watched the show yearly after that, but then lost a bit of interest. But I really found the ESC to be revived when the "new" countries took part.
I will never complain about diaspora voting, friendly voting, neighbour voting etc. If the song is good enough it can win without these votes. And if bad enough it won't go to final even with these votes. And I will certainly NOT make the ESC a competition between "the west" and "the east"!
